Strapping The World With Style

06Brigitte Daher, a young Lebanese designer, launched a new line of sandals into the market last week. Against all odds and amidst the political turmoil in Beirut today, Daher introduces a solution to all fashionistas’ problems – sandals that can easily be modulated into different designs, added colors and bling-bling accessories.

A full-time art director in one of the biggest advertising agencies worldwide, the designer is bursting with energy and ideas. She believes in change, creativity and hates routine in any shape or form and designing something new always helps break the monotony.

“I am always changing the way I wear my clothes. Change in fashion helps break daily routine. I never take the same road to work, I hate routine. I try to find a new way to go to the office, even if sometimes I get lost on the way and arrive a bit late.”

Daher also believes that designing something not only creates something new, but also finds a solution to a problem.

“One day I was thinking, I wish I had one pair of shoes that I could change to suit my different clothes and moods. The problem I have is spending a lot of money each season on several pairs of shoes. I am sure a lot of women will understand what I am saying,” says Daher.

The solution, in this case, was to design that special pair of shoes herself. She designed it for everyone looking for a small solution to their daily fashion dilemmas. “You can change the straps with different colors, add a bit of shine to your legs with some stones and more …depending on the accessories you choose to suit your different moods.”

Daher’s designs are under her nickname "Briiij", “ I wanted to keep it simple.”

What inspires the young talent? Fashion and trends change everyday. Her curiosity is enriched by watching what people wear on the streets. “There’s something new every time you look.”05_2

Her love for fashion has driven her creative potential towards this career direction. “I would rather be labeled a fashion victim than a routine victim any day."

Her plan is to have fun with designing. Looking at the world with curiosity and grasping everything that surrounds us. “Creativity is like a game of Lego. You collect pieces from here and there, and build with them in order to come up with a new shape,” she insists. “This is why I think anyone can be creative… finding a solution to any problem.”

“I want to try different designing in different fashion fields, and not restrict myself only to shoes, clothes or paintings. I want to try them all. I have so many ideas and so much energy that fall into different categories. The beauty of it is that I'm free to experiment and design anything that comes to my mind – no one said I have to just be a shoe designer - the sky is the limit.”- Nadine Fares Kahil

Briiij sandals ($70), Gladiator sandals ($80), plus additional straps ($10- $30). Currently sold in Beirut- orders can be made through briiij@hotmail.com.

Style Quips - Bette Midler

"Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world. - Bette Midler

Bette Midler, aka The Divine Miss M, knows a thing or two about the transformative power of great pair of shoes. Shoes are more than just essential protective coverings for our feet- at their highest heights shoes can become delicious, addictive foot candy. If you're lucky enough to dabble and stride in footwear at its finest (Pierre Hardy, Louboutin, Choo, Alaia...need I name more) blessed are your soles. Bette knows the road to success is best treaded with a haute pair of heels. They don't call her The Divine Ms. M for nothing.

My Name is Prince and I Am...

Prince_2

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all? Why, it's Prince of course. I came across Prince's self-titled 1979 album and the cover image of a young, handsomely dashing Prince had me seriously transfixed. Prince was smokin'! There's something manly and natural about this shot. Although I must admit, Prince was a primped to perfection- sporting the Farrah Fawcett flip that few men, including some women could flaunt and a full swipe of makeup. But oh, does he wear it well. Prince gains another star because the mane is all his, no weave or extensions for the future Purple Wonder. Confidence is the key here. I know few men that could pull off this look and still look manly. Absent also is any attire- just a bare chest accessorized with a curly mound of chest hair. Can chest hair be considered an accessory? Prince oozes style without an inch of clothing on his lithe frame. All you metrosexual men out there, take style notes! My personal suggestion is to pass on the hairstyle- that's simply for Prince and he's the ruler of his kingdom. Boy, how time flies...Prince turns 50 this year and continues to funk on. - Laina Faber

Tease Me

Volume was the buzz word for hair backstage at the spring fashion shows. Forget sleek this season- fluff, puff, spritz, and go.

Got Yourself A Gun

Lady_k_bag_6

Designer Ted Noten break all the rules when it comes to design. Nolan's unconventional style veers toward wearable art- so the term "jewelry artist" fits him better than the latter. Nolen mixes everyday objects as his medium: from porcelain dining ware, souvenirs from his globe-trotting trips, brooches with gold miniscule automatic weapons, to raw meat cast in acrylic. Noten's hit-making pieces include the limited-edition Lady K Prada bag which features an engraved gold-plated gun with bullet in tow. Talk about shock and awe. Forget the powder compact, lipstick and cellie as purse essentials. A chic pistol is the modern fashionista's only requirement to be drop dead gorgeous- no pun intended.
